Tu Hanh Pagoda – Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam 2022
In January 2022, Rilina and Dylan visited Tu Hanh Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for the first time. There, they spoke with the monks and learned about the difficult conditions faced not only by the abandoned children living at the pagoda but also by the surrounding community.
Many of the children at Tu Hanh have been abandoned and rely on the pagoda as their only home. Few are able to attend school, and those who do must take turns due to limited resources. The monks also shared that the temple roof was in urgent need of reinforcement, as rain regularly seeped through.
Outside the pagoda, the local community faced its own struggles. Many families survived on just $5 USD a week by selling vegetables and other small goods, often without stable housing. After hearing their stories, Rilina and Dylan decided to support both the children and the local vendors by purchasing food directly from them and contributing more than the cost to provide additional relief.
In addition, they donated funds to Tu Hanh for roof repairs and spent time with the children, sharing conversations, laughter, and encouragement.

Rilina and Dylan transport nonperishable food bought from neighborhood vendors, ensuring support for children at Tu Hanh Pagoda while helping sustain families living on daily earnings.

Rilina and Dylan select candy and snacks from elderly street vendors, both to brighten the children’s day with a special surprise and to lend support to the vendors.

Rilina, Dylan, and Holly shop for infant formula after learning that Tu Hanh Pagoda cared for babies, including those born with birth defects. With Dr. Dat Tran’s help, the children were gratefully found in good health.

Rilina and Dylan offer financial support to a barefoot elder in a straw hat, helping her care for her family during difficult times.

While waiting with the children for the small van that would take them to school, Rilina and Dylan shared smiles and conversation. The kids, who must take turns attending classes, joyfully posed for a playful photo with peace signs, thumbs up, and a heart.
